As Canada's first comprehensive interregional public transportation system, GO Transit is also Ontario's only transit system that links Toronto with the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Using a complex network of train service and complimenting bus routes, the Go Transit System is one the premier transportation systems in all of North America. With initial service commencing in May of 1967, ridership has eclipised the one billion passenger mark. Annual ridership is estimated at 49 million passengers a year. Officially known as the Greater Toronto Transit Authority (GTTA), GO Transit provides safe, convenient, and efficient transportation to the communities of the Toronto area.
The core component of the GO Transit System are the distinctive green-and-white trains. Offering quick and affordable transportation throughout the GTA, the Go Transit operates via seven (7) rail lines carrying approximately 165,000 passengers per day.
GO Train service connects with GO Buses, regional transit, and the Toronto Transit Commission system (TTC).
GO Transit’s bi-level railcar debuted in 1978
Each railcar offers three levels, with a mezzanine at each end of the car. The bi-level design was engineered and built in Thunder Bay, Ontario, by Bombardier Inc.
Passenger comfort and safety are prime features of the railcar design. Each car offers floor and overhead heaters, as well as two air-conditioning units.
The side windows are tinted safety glass.
Each car has a washroom, and a passenger alarm system to alert the train crew members of any problems on board.
One car of every GO Train is accessible to passengers who use mobility devices.
Seats on the lower level rotate up for easy access for wheelchairs or scooters. Train crew members provide a portable bridge between a specially designed “mini-platform” and the railcar for convenient boarding and disembarking.
For maximum convenience, most GO Train stations offer a special mini-platform on the main platform.
